Houston Chronicle 03/18/2011
COUNTRY ROYALTY

NOT HIS FIRST RODEO BY FAR

Alan Jackson has played to 1 million RodeoHouston fans and will be inducted into the Star Trail of Fame

By JOEY GUERRA
MUSIC WRITER

ALAN Jackson is about to become RodeoHouston royalty.

Tonight will be his 19th time on the revolving stage, and he’ll become only the fifth entertainer to perform in front of 1 million fans.

He’ll be inducted into the Star Trail of Fame before the show.

(I think that comes with a huge belt buckle.) Jackson joins an impressive group that includes Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, Charley Pride and George Strait.

(Other inductees include Gene Autry, the rodeo’s first star entertainer, Elvis Presley and Roy Rogers.) Onstage, expect Jackson’s usual slowand- steady style and an impressive run of hits. He parted ways with longtime label Arista Nashville in January and is in the early stages of writing a new album. But he does have a secret for keeping things fresh each year when he hits the revolving stage: “I’ve been real lucky and have never been one to change things up too much or do anything too crazy onstage,” he says.

“But if there’s a song that was a big hit around (here) that maybe I don’t normally do, I’ll try to do it for them. You know, with 50 some singles, it’s hard to fit ’em all in sometimes.”

Jackson arrives in town after a successful week of dates in Australia. (G’day mate!)

Q:You’re hitting the 1 million mark tonight. Can you wrap your head around that number?

A:It’s hard to picture a million of anything, I suppose. All I know is there’s always a whole lot of people out there when I walk out on that stage. I guess I can see how they’ve added up to a million over all these years.

Q:What’s an early memory of playing RodeoHouston that sticks with you, even today?

A: Just how overwhelming it is to come out there — and how big it is.

Q:As a veteran rodeo performer, how do you deal with the inevitable sound issues in the stadium?

A: I’ve played enough different places over the years that we’re pretty much prepared for anything anywhere we go.

Q:Favorite rodeo food?

A: Beef brisket.

Q:Scarier— rodeo bulls or rodeo clowns?

A:Well, I guess it’d be easier to deal with if you found yourself in a ring with a clown than a bull!”

Q:You earned your second Grammy alongside fellowRodeo-Houston performer the Zac BrownBand, which begs the question: cowboy hat or knit skull cap?

A:I always wear a cowboy hat onstage, but you’ll also probably find me in a ball cap when I’m at home or getting ready for a show.

Q:Your last studio disc was released in March 2010. Can you give us a tease of what you’ve been working on for the next album?

A:I’m always writing songs. Sometimes an idea just comes to you, and you’ve got to sit down and write it down. Those melodies come from somewhere, and I’ve just been really fortunate to have that.

Q:One thing that always makes you think of Houston?

A:The rodeo is definitely one of the first things that comes to mind, of course. Also a line from an early song, Chasin’ That

Neon Rainbow — “Heading down to Houston for a show on a Saturday night …”

Thanks so much AJTexasfan.  What a great article.   Loved the interview and got a great chuckle out of the rodeo clown answer.   Alan you have such a great sense of humor and we love hearing it.   This is going to be a great year for Alan.
Congratulations Alan on the prestigous award.                                            Marian

Jeri, I was able to be there when Alan received the Star Trail of Fame award before the Houston Rodeo performance yesterday.  My daughter is a volunteer with the Rodeo, so she was able to get all the details for me to know right where to be to watch.  Alan just came "strolling" in like he always does when he comes on stage for a concert.  He acknowledged all of us standing around watching and asked how we were doing.  He was looking at me when he finished the question, so I just answered and he smiled and shook his head.  It was a short presentation, after which he spoke for a few minutes thanking everyone and telling us how much he enjoys coming to Houston to the Rodeo.
For the past several years we have taken our grandchildren to the Rodeo on the day that Alan is to be there.  We do the Carnival and then go in for the Rodeo and of course to hear Alan sing.  The concert was wonderful - as usual!!  It was a fun day and was even more special because there was a deserved award for Alan and I was fortunate enough to be there!

Here is a link for the pictures I took at the Star Trail of Fame presentation:

OH YES..thank you so much for the great pictures.   Alan looks so nice and tan, but a little tired.   Probably still on Aussie time, which was not long ago.    He looked so interested.   What a fabulous honor and congratulations for being there and taking the photos.

Sherry sounds like you had a wonderful day and a Lil chat with Alan too!uhh huh!he must have noted you from your meet and greet, I would have said "I'm Fine, now that you're here". I love to tease him about driving so far to see him.lol

Sounds like your family really has connections w/your daughter volunteering there. Great that you got to see Alan there
among all the Biggie's at the nice Building. And to attend This "Country Royalty" Event and the Concert later, Oh My! How wonderful!!!

Alan seemed pleased w/all the attention , and I'm so glad, now that he is a bit older, that he accepts these most Prestigious awards with great pride! I am so happy for him.

Thanks for the links, and sharing them with us.. So glad you and your Family enjoyed it all and sounds like your family is
really involved in these  things in Houston.  Sounds wonderful!!! and Looked Great!

You look so nice in your M&G photo, I know Alan remembered you! Ha! I always think he does me , after that M&G but as many as he sees, probably not! lol still like Fan Club seats to see and be up close, we are so very lucky or is it spoiled..I can't wait to see Alan again..My husband was ill the last time I had a chance to go..Thanks for telling about your experience! You have a nice daughter.
I'm so happy for you!, Jeri-MS

Sue, no Denise was not there with him.  The people sitting next to him were the man who arranged for Alan and 13 other entertainers to be at the Rodeo this year and Alan's agent (sorry I do not remember their names).

Jeri you are sweet to think Alan remembers us after a M&G!!!  LOL!!

Sherry,

Thanks so much for sharing the pictures. They are great! He looks great, but I agree he does look tired. Who wouldn't be after the whirlwind tour schedule he has endured lately. How lucky you were to get to see and meet him. I am still waiting (patiently??).
