Found  this article very interesting.  I mentioned this sound to my husband when I first heard the song, which is so fitting for Hard Hat and Hammer.  My husband has some hearing loss and is unable to detect the sound, and tried to explain to him what he was missing.  I cranked up the volume and he is still unable to pickup that sound.  Interesting background on this instrument.
